High-impedance ion-diode experiment on the Aurora pulser

Abstract: Proton beams with currents ⩾50 kA at 5 MeV in a ≲160-ns FWHM pulse have been extracted from an ion diode operated on the Aurora pulser. This current corresponds to an efficiency (proton currrent/total current) of 20%, which compares favorably with numerical simulation. The simulation indicates that the ion current is enhanced over the Child-Langmuir value due to increased electron lifetime in the diode. The proton beam directed onto a LiCl target provides a source of 1.8×1012 neutrons/sr/pulse in the forward d… Show more

“…One of the most successful experiments was carried out on the Aurora pulsed-power generator which was able to accelerate 5 Â 10 16 protons up to 5 MeV energies. 47 A 160 ns FWHM pulse implied an ion current of about 50 kA. The ions appeared to originate primarily from a small area (2-4 cm 2 ) at an anode.…”

“…The presence of carbon ions has been identified in previous ion-diode experiments by the activation of aluminum with the 27 Al( 12 C,an) 34m Cl reaction. 40 Additionally, carbon ions consisting of C þ1 , C þ2 , C þ3 , and C þ4 with a carbon fraction of about 10% have been measured previously in an ion PBD with a Thomson-parabola ion analyzer. 59 Here, a carbon fraction of 10% with an average charge state of about þ3 would be measured as about 10 kA.…”

“…Note that Aurora was a traditional oil-Blumlein accelerator, not an IVA, but had a stainless steel MITL with 50-X vacuum impedance between the oil-vacuum interface and the diode load. The ion diode on Aurora was fielded in both negative polarity with the full-length MITL 40 and positive polarity with a reduced-length MITL. 39 In both cases the Marx was only charged to 90 kV (compared with 120 kV for full charge).…”
