The oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) very often affects subjects above the sixth decade of life. However an increasing incidence has been observed in younger individuals, below 40 years. We conducted a systematized review of the current clinical, histopathological and therapeutic aspects of OSCC in young patients. Our work included studies that addressed OSCC involving young patients in the period 2007-2012, and which were indexed in PubMed. Initially, 499 articles were obtained; after refinement, 340 articles had their titles and abstracts evaluated, with 17 included in the sample. The majority of studies reported male predominance (87.5%), association with tobacco and/ or alcohol use (66.6%), advanced clinical stages at diagnosis (77.7%) and, at histopathology, moderately differentiated tumors (72.7%). Based on the results, we believe there are differences in the factors associated with pathogenesis, biological behavior and prognosis in young patients, since most studies show more rapid and aggressive tumor progression in this age group. We suggest the conduction of research focusing on the pathogenesis and carcinogenesis of OSCC in young patients, thereby searching for better scientific evidence.

Résumé -Depuis plusieurs années, l'incidence des carcinomes épidermoïdes buccaux et oropharyngés augmente chez les sujets jeunes. Cette augmentation ne serait pas due aux facteurs de risque classiques des cancers buccaux : tabac, alcool. Un nouveau cas de carcinome épidermoïde lingual est rapporté chez une jeune femme de 21 ans sans aucun antécédent. L'aspect clinique était celui d'une petite ulcération douloureuse et persistante sur le bord latéral gauche de la langue. Le traitement par glossectomie partielle de la langue mobile a permis une rémission totale.Abstract -Oral squamous cell carcinoma in young people: a case report. The increase of oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma among young people has been demonstrated worldwide. Major risk factors like tobacco and alcohol are not etiologic factors in young patients. A new case of lingual squamous cell carcinoma is reported in a 21-year-old woman. The clinical appearance was that of a small and persistent painful ulceration on the left lateral border of the tongue. Partial glossectomy of the mobile tongue has allowed a complete remission.Les cancers de la cavité buccale occupent, par ordre de fréquence, le 8 e rang parmi les cancers [1], 95 % de ces cancers sont des carcinomes épidermoïdes. Ils surviennent typiquement chez des hommes alcoolo-tabagiques de plus de cinquante ans. La langue est la localisation la plus fréquente et représente entre 25 et 40 % des cancers buccaux [2]. Alors que les cancers buccaux diminuent chez les sujets de plus de 50 ans, différentes études ont rapporté une augmentation de l'incidence (jusqu'à 6 %) des cancers de l'amygdale et de la langue et les sujets atteints ont moins de 40 ans [3][4][5][6][7]. Ce nouveau groupe de patients présenterait un profil clinique particulier et une association limitée aux facteurs de risque « classiques » comme le tabac et l'alcool, puisque la plupart des études n'ont trouvé aucune association entre la consommation alcoolo-tabagique et la survenue de ces cancers. La durée d'exposition à ces substances serait trop courte pour induire la carcinogenèse [7][8][9]. Abstract. Aneuploidy is typically assessed by flow cytometry (FCM) and image cytometry (ICM). We used optical projection tomographic microscopy (OPTM) for assessing cellular DNA content using absorption and fluorescence stains. OPTM combines some of the attributes of both FCM and ICM and generates isometric highresolution three-dimensional (3-D) images of single cells. Although the depth of field of the microscope objective was in the submicron range, it was extended by scanning the objective's focal plane. The extended depth of field image is similar to a projection in a conventional x-ray computed tomography. These projections were later reconstructed using computed tomography methods to form a 3-D image. We also present an automated method for 3-D nuclear segmentation. Nuclei of chicken, trout, and triploid trout erythrocyte were used to calibrate OPTM. Ratios of integrated optical densities extracted from 50 images of each standard were compared to ratios of DNA indices from FCM. A comparison of mean square errors with thionin, hematoxylin, Feulgen, and SYTOX green was done. Feulgen technique was preferred as it showed highest stoichiometry, least variance, and preserved nuclear morphology in 3-D. The addition of this quantitative biomarker could further strengthen existing classifiers and improve early diagnosis of cancer using 3-D microscopy.

Abstract: Young patients with TSCC represent a distinct clinical entity. The high incidence of DNA ploidy abnormalities suggest that they may have increased genomic instability and indicates underlying genetic differences between TSCC in young and older patients.
