High isolation and compact MIMO antenna system with defected shorting wall

Abstract: In this paper, a compact multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system with high isolation is proposed for 2.4 GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) application. The system is composed of two aperture-coupled shorted patch antennas with a spacing of 4 mm (only 0.032λ). The antenna is fed with an H-shaped coupling slot, and the defected shorting wall is used for high isolation. The proposed MIMO system exhibits an isolation of better than −20 dB and a maximum isolation of −43 dB at the central frequency… Show more

“…Also, as stated before, in the design of a compact MIMO antenna system, it is necessary to use antenna miniaturization techniques that keep the antenna design simple while maintaining the diversity performance as high as possible although the antenna elements are placed close to each other. So far, many miniaturization techniques for MIMO antenna systems have been investigated for ISM band operation, including 2.45-and/or 5-GHz ISM bands [18][19][20][21].…”

“…[20] used a defected shorting wall between two elements of aperture-coupled patch antenna, separated by only 4 mm, to reduce an isolation by 20 dB, and for miniaturizing the system, two H-shaped slot feedings were employed. The envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) less than 0.01 is obtained.…”

“…There has been a vast variety of research studies dedicated for isolation improvement. For instance in [13] a compact MIMO antenna is proposed for 2.4 GHz WLAN applications. The high inter-element isolation is obtained by suitable adoption of a defected shorting wall.…”

“…Besides, more requirements in terms of multiband and broad operation are needed. Consequently, several studies have been conducted to design miniaturized multiband antennas which can support multiple communication applications [1][2][3]. Thus, numerous antenna size reduction techniques have been reported elsewhere; for example, introduction of defected microstrip structure (DMS) [4], using a defected ground structure (DGS) [5][6][7] and loading the patch with shorting posts [8].…”
