High Levels of Maternal Serum IL‐17 and Activin A in Pregnant Women Affected by Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract: Women with SLE show increased secretions of activin A, IL-17, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α during gestation, with a different trend for the various cytokines. These data suggest that patients with SLE have a hyper-reactive immune system, probably receiving a placental contribution.

“…In our study, serum levels of Th2 cytokines were similar in SLE patients compared with controls and only IL-10 was higher in SLE patients than in healthy women. These data are comparable to those recently published by Torricelli et al (33) who found higher serum levels of IL-10 in pregnant SLE patients compared with healthy pregnant women, and IL-10 serum levels progressively increased during pregnancy. Similarly, Muñoz-Valle et al (34) showed higher levels of IL-10 in pregnant SLE patients than in healthy pregnant women, particularly during the last trimester of pregnancy.…”

“…Moreover, our data appear similar to those recently published by Torricelli et al [40]. In their study, they also found higher levels of IL-10 in pregnant patients affected with SLE compared with healthy pregnant women.…”

“…15,18 No significant difference in the expression profile of lupus and lupus nephritis subjects were observed in our study. [33][34][35] However, no such differences were observed in our study. Discrepancies observed in serum concentration of IL-17A and F and peripheral blood mRNA expression could be explained by the fact that IL-17 present in serum may originate from tissue-located cells and not necessarily only from Th-17 cells.…”
