“…The content of secoisolariciresinol diglucoside in flaxseed has been reported to vary from 6.1 to 25.9 mg g (1 (Johnsson et al 2000;Eliasson et al 2003). Lignans are classified as phytoestrogens because of their structural similarities with natural and synthetic estrogens and antiestrogens, but they are also able to compete with endogenous estradiol for estrogen receptors.…”

“…Wiesenborn et al (2003) obtained the amount of SDG as 11.7-24.1 mg/g defatted linseed meal of genotypes. Eliasson et al (2003) also reported that different samples of linseeds varied considerably in their content of SDG (11.9-25.9 mg/g). Beejmohun et al (2007) found 16.1 mg SDG /g pressed linseed cake.…”

“…The highest oil content was found in cultivar TR 73572 as 45.07% followed by 42.29% in cultivar TR 77705 on dry matter basis. In studies conducted on linseed, the total oil content of genotypes varied between 29 and 48% (Green and Marshall, 1981;Batta et al, 1985;Eliasson et al, 2003;Wakjira et al, 2004).…”

“…Starting with an extraction with 1,4-dioxane/ethanol and alkaline hydrolysis, they were able to purify SDG by reverse-phase chromatography using silica gel, and they were finally able to confirm the identity of the compound by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). This same technique was used by other authors, who conducted similar studies for the quantification of SDG (Eliasson et al, 2003). Afterward, Li et al (2008) and Yuan, Li, Xu, Wang, and Liu (2008) purified SDG with chromatographic techniques using solid-phase extraction (SPE), silica gel columns, and thin-layer chromatography prior to the extraction with methanol.…”

“…On this basis, Chen, Liu, Shi, and Ma (2007) developed a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with ultraviolet (UV) detection for the analysis of SDG in flaxseed, which involves extraction from defatted flaxseed flour (DFF) with methanol and basic hydrolysis with aqueous sodium hydroxide. To simplify this extraction methodology, Eliasson, Kamal-Eldin, Andersson, and Åman (2003) eliminated the alcohol extraction step by using aqueous alkaline hydrolysis directly, resulting in a higher yield than that obtained by the hydrolysis of alcoholic extracts (Johnsson, Kamal-Eldin, Lundgren, & Åman, 2000). Other technique includes the use of supercritical CO 2 for lignan extraction from flaxseed which results in lower SDG extraction compared to the traditional solvent extractions (Comin, Temelli, & Saldaña, 2011).…”
