High-Porosity Polymer Composite for Removing Oil Spills in Cold Regions

Abstract: In this work, polyvinyl chloride (PVC)/clay nanofiber composites with various contents were fabricated by the electrospinning process. The morphology, porosity, density, and mechanical properties of the nanofiber mats were investigated. In addition, PVC/clay nanofiber mats were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. Moreover, the influence of the clay content in the nanofiber mats and its effect on oil sorption capacity were … Show more

“…The addition of Mt to PCL–CHIT nanofibers decreased their size. As clays contain cations, they increase the conductivity of the solution [ 48 ]. The intercalation of Mt with PAMAM G1 and the decoration of PCL–CHIT nanofibers with PAMAM G1 –Mt increased the nanofiber’s diameter.…”

“…The peaks of DMAc solvent (at 1011, 1392, 1633, and 2931 cm –1 ) did not appear on the FTIR spectra of the fabricated PVC or PVC@Ag/TiO 2 nanofiber membranes. , The fabricated PVC nanofiber membrane also had a high similarity of peaks with a nanofiber made from pure PVC reported by Quoc et al (2021) . It indicates that the DMAc solvents entirely evaporated during the electrospinning process.…”

“…There was absorbance at 2908 cm –1 (assigned to C–H stretching), 1427 cm –1 (assigned to CH 2 deformation), 1253 cm –1 (assigned to CH–rocking), 964 cm –1 (assigned to trans CH wagging), and 613 cm –1 (assigned to C–Cl stretching), which were the characteristics of the PVC polymer. 45 , 46 After adding Ag and TiO 2 , a broad peak appeared at ∼3439 cm –1 , assigned to the stretching vibration of the hydroxyl group (−OH). It is due to the water molecules and CO 2 absorption from the air.…”

“…The decrease of porosity will increase the effective bearing area of the composite sample, thus improving its mechanical properties. [31][32][33] In addition, when the molding pressure is low, lamination defects will occur inside the composite specimens, which may cause stress concentration inside the composite materials, leading to the failure of the composite materials under low load. 34 Table 2 displays the density and Shore hardness of the GF/MoS 2 /PTFE composites under various pressures.…”
