High-power pulsed diode-pumped Er:ZBLAN fiber laser

Abstract: We report on the operation and performance of a gain-switched Er:ZBLAN fiber laser based on an active pulsed diode pump system. The produced laser pulses offer high peak powers while retaining the high average powers and efficiency of the cw regime. The measured pulse duration was about 300 ns and nearly independent of the pump repetition frequency. The maximum obtained 68 W of peak power is the highest reported, to our knowledge, for diode-pumped Er:ZBLAN fiber lasers, and the 2 W of average power at the repe… Show more

“…Fluoride glass pulsed fiber lasers have been reported based on Er 3 -doped and Er 3 , Pr 3 codoped fluoride fibers [1][2][3][4][5]. Recently, we have extended this work by creating actively Q-switched cascaded 380 and 260 ns pulses at 3.005 and 2.074 μm, respectively, using singly Ho 3 -doped ZBLAN fiber [6] and 78 ns actively Q-switched pulse widths at 2.86 μm using Ho 3 , Pr 3 codoped ZBLAN fiber at a comparatively high slope efficiency of 20% [7].…”

“…For the purpose of obtaining excellent mid-infrared spectroscopic properties, a suitable glass host is required. To date, fluoride glass, in particular ZBLAN, has been widely investigated as a mid-infrared laser material due to its quite low maximum phonon energy and high solubility of rare earth ions (4)(5)(6)(7)(8). Moreover, a maximum output power of 20.6 W at 2.825 μm has been reported in Er…”

“…The operating wavelength was 2.800 μm, and the efficiency with respect to the launched pump power was lower at 17%. Higher efficiencies were achieved by gain switching an Er 3doped ZBLAN laser, which produced 68 W peak power, 300 ns pulses at 100 kHz, with an efficiency with respect to launched pump power of 34% [6].…”

“…Although longer wavelength emission has been reported in cw mode using fiber Bragg gratings [14], the naturally longer emission wavelength of Ho 3 fluorescence allows simple wavelength extension for Q-switched fluoride fiber lasers [15]. Gain switched Er 3 -doped ZBLAN fiber lasers have produced high efficiencies [6]; the current laser is advantageous in providing a broader range of pulse repetition rates.…”
