“…The proposed sensor has sensitivity about two times greater than the figure of 0.18 THz∕MPa reported for the Bragg grating embedded in a laminated composite [16] and almost three orders of magnitude lower than the record high sensitivity of 240 THz∕MPa reported recently for rocking filters [11]. The most important drawback of the proposed sensing concept is the limitation of the operation range to pressure at which the fiber phase birefringence becomes null.…”

“…Since FBGs are very small, once they are bound to the host materials, the strain distribution of FBGs is determined by the mechanical property of these host materials. In a previous paper [4], we have Mass reported one novel method of fabricating a high pressure FBG sensor with carbon fiber reinforced laminates (CFRLs). In that scheme, multi layers of CFRLs and epoxy are sandwiched to be host materials of FBG to achieve a broad measurement range and good sensitivity.…”

“…In 1993, Xu et al [1] showed that the pressure sensitivity of a bare FBG is only À 3.04 pm/MPa. Thereafter, many approaches for enhancing the sensitivity of FBG pressure sensors were proposed [2][3][4][5][6]. However, the measurement range of the FBG with polymer [3] is small due to the polymer's mechanical properties.…”

“…The methods mentioned above are also hardly used for harsh environments and special conditions, such as deep sea drilling. The FBG and carbon fiber laminated composite [6] can compensate for these shortcomings, and it has high sensitivity, large measurement range and relatively small size. Even now, this pressure sensor cannot be installed in some extremely narrow space, where just a bare FBG can be installed.…”
