High-resolution genetic mapping of a novel brown planthopper resistance locus, Bph34 in Oryza sativa L. X Oryza nivara (Sharma & Shastry) derived interspecific F2 population

Abstract: A BPH-resistant locus designated as Bph34 identified in Oryza nivara acc. IRGC104646 on long arm of chromosome 4 using high-resolution mapping with 50 K SNP chip. BPH resistance contributed by locus showed dominant inheritance in F and F. The Bph34 locus is 91 kb in size and contains 11 candidate genes. In addition to SNP markers, SSR markers, RM16994 and RM17007 co-segregated with the BPH resistance. These two SSR markers can facilitate marker-assisted transfer of the Bph34 locus into elite rice cultivars in … Show more

“…However, improved cultivars carrying these genes lost their resistance to BPH due to the evolution of new biotypes (populations) [1,8,9,10,11,12]. At present, nine ( Bph3 , Bph6 , Bph9 , Bph14 , Bph17 , Bph18 , Bph26 , Bph29 , and Bph32 ) of the 34 BPH resistance genes ( Bph/bph ) have been cloned or characterized in rice and its relatives [13,14]. Of them, Bph3 (a cluster of plasma-membrane-localized lectin receptor kinases, OsLecRK s), has been considered for breeding rice cultivars with broad-spectrum and durable insect resistance [7,10].…”

“…For instance, thirteen genes are found in two distinct clusters of chromosome 4. Six of them ( Bph6 , bph12 , Bph27, bph18 ( t ) , Bph27 ( t ) , and Bph34 ) are clustered on the long arm of chromosome 4 (Qiu et al 2010, 2012; Huang et al 2013; Fujita et al 2013; Kumar et al 2018); and seven genes ( Bph3, Bph12, Bph15, Bph17, Bph20 ( t ), Bph30 , and Bph33 ) are found on the short arm of chromosome 4 (Liu et al, 2015; Yang et al 2002; Sun et al 2005; Yang et al 2004; Rahman et al 2009; Wang et al 2018; Hu et al 2018). According to the present study Bph36 also occupies this cluster, and via high-resolution mapping, it was successfully identified on the short arm of chromosome 4 roughly 2 Mb downstream from the Bph12, Bph17 , Bph15 , and Bph20 regions (Yang et al 2002; Sun et al 2005; Yang et al 2004; Rahman et al 2009) and 0.6 Mb upstream from Bph3 in the Nipponbare genome (Liu et al, 2015).…”

“…Host‐plant resistance in rice is considered to be the most practical and economical approach for controlling rice planthoppers . In addition to the previously documented 84 major genes/quantitative trait loci for planthopper resistance in rice, at least 13 new major genes/quantitative trait loci for planthopper resistance in rice have been reported over the last 2 years, including Bph30 (AC‐1613), Bph31 , Bph32 (Rathu Heenati), Bph33 , Bph33 ( t ), Bph34 , qSBPH5 , qSBPH7 , qSBPH10 , qWBPH3.1 , qWBPH3.2 , qWBPH11 and qWBPH12 . Moreover, three unnamed recessive genes for BPH resistance have been reported from two newly identified rice germplasm sources (PHS29 and MRST3) .…”
