High-Resolution Observations of Upwelling and Front in Daya Bay, South China Sea

Abstract: Field observations of coastal regions are important for studying physical and biological features. Observations of high-resolution coastal phenomena were obtained by using a tow-yo instrument and a turbulence profiler at Daya Bay in the South China Sea in October 2015. Details of coastal phenomena, including warm water from a nuclear plant discharge, as well as an upwelling, and front, were obtained. The upwelling, with a width of 2 km, resulted in saltier and more turbid water near the bottom, with low chloro… Show more

“…The South China Sea (SCS), covering approximately 3.5 million square kilometers, stands as one of the deepest and largest semi-enclosed marginal seas in the northwestern Pacific Ocean (99-125 • E, 0-25 • N, Figure 1). Renowned for its rich coral reefs and abundant fishery resources [31][32][33][34], the SCS boasts a dynamic environment characterized by mesoscale eddies, internal waves, and various active processes, contributing to its complexity and diversity [35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42]. Bordered by landmasses to the north, west, and south, the SCS is delineated from the Pacific Ocean by the Philippine Islands and Taiwan Island to the east.…”

“…The SCS is one of the largest semi-enclosed marginal seas globally, spanning approximately 3.5 million square kilometers. It is renowned for its complex and diverse dynamical environment [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. Recent research indicates that the SCS is a hotspot for MHWs [29].…”

“…The environmental impact of the cooling water discharge from the DBNPP has received great attention from society (Wang et al, 2008;Hao et al, 2016;Ye et al, 2018). Many scholars have conducted a lot of research work on the impact of the cooling water discharge from the plant on the marine environment and marine ecosystem dynamics of Daya Bay (Yue et al, 2018;Jiang and Wang, 2020;Mao et al, 2021).…”
