High specific power electrical machines: A system perspective

Abstract: There has been a growing need for high specific power electrical machines for a wide range of applications. These include hybrid/electric traction applications, aerospace applications and Oil and Gas applications. A lot of work has been done to accomplish significantly higher specific power electrical machines especially for aerospace applications. Several machine topologies as well as thermal management schemes have been proposed. Even though there has been a few publications that provided an overview of high… Show more

“…The selection of the electrical machine depends not only on its size and power but also on its weight. A very high power density of machines is necessary [120,121]. Rolls Royce developed, for E Fan-X model, 2.5 MW S/G with a power density of 10 kW/kg [122].…”

“…The AEA is an aircraft with electric propulsion, in which all nonpropulsive powers are entirely electric. Conventional electric motors do not provide sufficient power density to be used for electric propulsion on large aircraft [120]. The implementation of superconducting materials in electrical drives was not realisable, due to the requirement of very low temperatures, reaching only several Kelvins.…”

“…For the high-power machines, in general, and S/Gs in particular, future research would take advantage of a heavy focus on the following issues. 1) Ultra-high power density [190] with intensive cooling [67] integrated with PEC. 2) Potentialit for using coreless designs and/or superconducting materials.…”

“…High system voltage level could leverage the possibility of more efficient and power-dense EDSs. In aerospace applications, there are already motors that are operating beyond 540 V. Example of these motors are used for propulsion of small electric aircraft operating at 800 and 700 VDC, manufactured by Rotex and ENSTROJ respectively [109].…”
