Abstract:Numerical simulations based on the large eddy simulation approach were conducted with the aim to explore vaneless diffuser rotating stall instability in a centrifugal compressor. The effect of the impeller blade passage was included as an inlet boundary condition with sufficiently low flow angle relative to the tangent to provoke the instability and cause circulation in the diffuser core flow. Flow quantities, velocity and pressure, were extracted to accumulate statistics for calculating mean velocity and mean Reynolds stresses in the wall-to-wall direction. The paper focuses on the assessment of the complex response of the system to the velocity perturbations imposed, the resulting pressure gradient and flow curvature effects.

Rotating stall in a vaneless diffuser of radial flow pump is studied. The measurements have consisted of: i/ unsteady pressure measurements delivered by two microphones, ii/ 9 steady pressure taps mounted in one radial line to measure the pressure recovery in the vaneless diffuser. Spectrum analysis was used to identify and characterize rotating stall. An assumption was made to estimate the losses in the vaneless diffuser to evaluate the effect of the instability development on its performance. The result has shown that the arising of rotating stall has a positive effect on the diffuser performance. Two possible reasons are proposed: 1. A blockage in the diffuser due to the unstable cells which shortens the streamlines and decreased the friction losses along the vaneless diffuser. 2. The topology of rotating stall cells results in the convection of fluid coming from outside part of the pump model to the vaneless diffuser.

This is an author-deposited version published in: https://sam.ensam.eu Handle ID AbstractThe overall performance of a vane-island type diffuser of a centrifugal pump model was obtained by means of directional probe traverses. These measurements were performed in an air model of a real hydraulic pump for five volume flow rates. Directional probe traverses are performed with a classical three-hole probe to cover most of the complete inlet section of the diffuser from hub to shroud and from pressure to suction side. Existing Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement results are also used to compare probe measurement results between the inlet and outlet throats of vane island diffuser at mid-span. Some assistance from already existing unsteady calculation, including leakage effects, is used to evaluate the numerical approach capability and to correctly define the mean initial conditions at impeller's outlet section. Pressure recovery and the measured total pressure loss levels inside this particular vane diffuser geometry are then calculated. Detailed analysis of the flow structure at the inlet section of the vane island diffuser is presented to focus on pressure evolution inside the entire diffuser section for different flow rates. The combined effects of incidence angle and blockage distributions along hub to shroud direction are found to play an important role on loss distribution in such a diffuser.
