High-speed video analysis of damped harmonic motion

Abstract: In this paper, we acquire and analyse high-speed videos of a spring–mass system oscillating in glycerin at different temperatures. Three cases of damped harmonic oscillation are investigated and analysed by using high-speed video at a rate of 120 frames s−1 and Tracker Video Analysis (Tracker) software. We present empirical data for the three cases of damped motion in graphical form. We also provide graphical proof of the relationship between the damped angular frequency and the damping constant. Finally, we … Show more

“…The slit distance is investigated by spectral analysis with Tracker can be more precise (Pratidhina et al, 2020). Educators and scientist use Tracker to teach and study various topics such as vector object falling in liquid and air (Sirisathitkul et al 2013), projectile motion (Yusuf, 2016), mechanical energy (Bryan, 2010), damped harmonic oscillation (Poonyawatpornkul & Wattanakasiwich, 2013), torsion (Eadkhong et al, 2012), and impulse (Ayop, 2017).…”

“…Tracker has been used for pedagogical purposes and complex physics experiments. Educators and scientist use Tracker to teach and study various topics such as vector object falling in liquid and air [3], projectile motion [4,5], mechanical energy [6], kater pendulum [7], damped harmonic oscillation [8], torsion [9], impulse [10], astronomy [11], and optical geometry [12]. Tracker is a potential tool to promote and guide the student as a scientist.…”

“…Tracker includes features such as object tracking with position, velocity, and acceleration overlays and graphs, calibration points and line profiles for analysis of spectra and interference patterns [1]. Some studies have explored the potential of Tracker for pedagogical learning tools [2][3][4][5]. Poonyawatpornkul and Wattanakasiwich [3] use Tracker to analyze damped harmonic oscillation; Rodrigues and Simeão Carvalho [6] use Tracker to teach optical phenomena; Wee, Tan, Leong, and Tan [5] integrate Tracker in physics class when discussing free-fall motion.…”
