High-Temperature Superconducting Non-Insulation Closed-Loop Coils for Electro-Dynamic Suspension System

Abstract: The null-flux electro-dynamic suspension (EDS) system is a feasible high-speed maglev system with speeds of above 600 km/h. Owing to their greater current-carrying capacity, superconducting magnets can provide a super-magnetomotive force that is required for the null-flux EDS system, which cannot be provided by electromagnets and permanent magnets. Relatively mature high-speed maglev technology currently exists using low-temperature superconducting (LTS) magnets as the core, which works in the liquid helium te… Show more

“…The NI winding technique is promising for application in PCM coils to provide those advantages [10,[37][38][39]. Recently, our group adopted NI PCM REBCO coils to develop the first HTS electrodynamic suspension train system in China [14,40,41]. The Korea Railroad Research Institute is trying metalinsulation (MI) PCM REBCO coils as the on-board magnets for a vacuum tube maglev train project [3,4].…”

“…This work focus on the copper-encapsulated REBCO tapes, which are more robust (while with much lower engineering current density) to be processed in application systems than the tapes without encapsulation. Such copperencapsulated REBCO tapes in this work has been successfully applied to the on-board magnets of the HTS maglev test line in CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co. Ltd in China, and has realized the vehicle running with electrodynamic suspension [48].…”

“…REBCO coated conductors (CCs) are becoming the preferred wire choice in many high-temperature superconducting (HTS) applications, such as field-triggered persistent current switches (PCSs) [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8], flux pumps (FPs) [9][10][11][12], fault current limiters (FCLs) [13][14][15], electrodynamic suspension systems [16][17][18] and linear synchronous motors [19,20]. In these HTS applications, a REBCO CC carries DC currents under AC and DC magnetic fields.…”
