Higher-Order Thinking Skills on Test Items Designed by English Teachers: A Content Analysis

Abstract: In dealing with the demand for critical and creative thinking skills in the 21st-century, the Indonesia government has implemented 2013 curriculum which promotes higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in the classroom. However, the implementation of HOTS-based curriculum gave impact to the way teacher assesses the students' thinking skills as they are expected to be able to design HOTS-based test items in assessing students. Accordingly, this study investigated the higher-order thinking skills represented on the … Show more

“…According to the previous studies, the majority of the analyzed questions are those with lower-order thinking skills (Ighbaria, 2013;Abdelrahman, 2014;Freahat and Smadi, 2014;Olimat, 2015;Ulum, 2016;Tangsakul, 2017;Maharma, 2018;Adli and Asgar, 2019). Other studies on the cognitive levels of test items showed the same results (Ebadi and Shahbazian, 2015;Dwi Utami, Nurkamto , and Marmanto, 2019). Supported by previous studies, the vast majority of the IGSCE's reading questions between the years 2014 and 2018 represent lower-cognitive thinking skills.…”

“…Lower order thinking skills of Bloom's Taxonomy take place a great deal of emphasis in the course book content analysis of some researchers (Ighbaria, 2013;Textbooks: (Ighbaria, 2013;Abdelrahman, 2014;Freahat and Smadi, 2014;Olimat, 2015;Ulum, 2016;Tangsakul, 2017;Maharma, 2018;Adli and Asgar, 2019). Furthermore, some other studies tackled the coverage of Bloom's Taxonomy cognitive domains in tests (Ebadi and Shahbazian, 2015;Dwi Utami, Nurkamto , and Marmanto, 2019).…”

“…Although there is an urgent need for HOTS-based assessment in this current era, there are still several problems with implementing HOTS in teaching-learning practices, especially in language assessment (Hashim et al, 2017). Despite the significance of HOTS, in Indonesia, the level of teachers' understanding of the HOTS concept in teaching and learning activity and assessment are still low (Utami et al, 2019). Then, many research investigates textbooks, especially for senior high school students concerning HOTS and LOTS questions during the last decades using content analysis based on Bloom's taxonomy (Anasy, 2016;Atiullah et al, 2019;Köksal & Ulum, 2018;Susandari et al, 2020).…”

“…Based on the data of this study related to the participants' competencies in designing HOTS-based formative assessment, the data showed that participants experience difficulties in creating HOTS-based formative assessment. Some previous studies also analyzed HOTSbased questions, especially in Indonesia, like the study of Anasy (2016), Atiullah et al (2019), Susandari et al (2020), Utami et al (2019), andZaiturrahmi et al (2017). Then, there are some previous studies in which investigate HOTS in a high-stakes assessment that is National Examination in Indonesia, such as Ahmad ( 2016), Putra andAbdullah (2019), andRamadhana et al (2018).…”
