Highly Bioactive Porous Composite Scaffolds of Bovine Hydroxyapatite (BHA-Ti, BHA-TiO2, BHA-Li2O)

Abstract: Porous scaffolds of hydroxyapatite (HA), derived from calcined bovine bones and doped with various reinforcing materials, such as Ti, TiO2 and Li2O, were produced with the aid of commercial sugar, which was added as 20 wt% with respect to the total batch, and sintering at 1200°C and 1300°C. The samples were characterized by SEM and X-ray diffraction analysis as well as by porosity measurements. The experimental results showed that porosity can be controlled by the correct selection of doping materials. The opt… Show more

“…Low mechanical properties of HA can be improved by precise control of the microstructure and the use of various reinforcements [46]. One of the most commonly used methods to improve the mechanical properties of HA, reinforcements of its with oxide based ceramics such as ZrO 2 [7], TiO 2 [8], Al 2 O 3 [9], MgO [10], BaTiO 3 [11] etc. In the present study, we doped a commercially synthetic hydroxyapatite powder with lanthanum oxide and the eect of lanthanum oxide on the microstructural and mechanical properties of CSHA was investigated.…”
