Highly efficient In2S3/WO3 photocatalysts: Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism for enhanced photocatalytic water pollutant degradation under visible light irradiation

Abstract: A Z-scheme system In2S3/WO3 heterojunction was fabricated via a mild hydrothermal method and further applied for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TCH) and Rhodamine B (Rh B) under visible light irradiation.

“…QDs are semiconductors, considered QD materials with their volumetric footprint strictly restricted at the nanoscale, and are mostly prepared by thermal injection and lowtemperature solution methods. They have shown great application in solar cells [16,17], photocatalysis [18][19][20][21][22] and light-emitting diodes [23,24] in the past.…”

“…Even if timely energy conservation measures are taken, the world energy demand is expected to increase triple by 2050 [ 3 ]. In addition, the consumption of fossil fuels produces some nasty side effects, including air pollution and greenhouse effects [ 4 , 5 ]. Solar energy is a renewable clean energy [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…Usually semiconductors including titanium oxide (TiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), iron (III) oxide (Fe2O3), zinc sulfide (ZnS), zirconium oxide (ZrO2), cadmium sulfide (CdS), among others, are selected as photocatalysts due to their narrow bandgap and electronic structure [12,13]. Semiconductors are materials that have an unoccupied conduction band and an occupied valence band, intermediate to that shown by conductors and insulators [14]. In semiconductor photocatalysis, electrons from the valence band (VB) are excited to the conduction band (CB) by light of higher energy than the respective bandgap of the semiconductor [14].…”

In semiconductor photocatalysis, electrons from the valence band (VB) are excited to the conduction band (CB) by light of higher energy than the respective bandgap of the semiconductor [14]. This migration results in the formation of electron-hole pair (ecb / h + vb) [15].…”
