Paediatrics form a small part of the workload of the majority of community specialist stoma nurses. As with all patients, it is the nurses’s responsibility to ensure that a child’s stoma care plan fulfils their needs. When a child with a prolapsed stoma is from an ethnic minority, it may add to the complexity of care. Specialist stoma nurses need to be open to learning about each patient’s culture and adjusting their approach to meeting the family’s needs. In this article Pip Chandler reflects on how working within a multidisciplinary team, including education staff, and gaining an understanding of their roles and responsibilities, has helped to personalise her practice to support young people with a stoma from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
