Abstract

The appropriateness of technology change is linked to the social and political structures of a society. But most analyses of this change tend to concentrate on the technical issues and disregard the social processes which enhance or impede technological change. (…) it however becomes clear that the socio-economic and political aspects of technological change need to be taken into account when considering the issues of appropriate technology in agriculture. (…) we need to go beyond the perspective which seeks to explain technological change only in terms of ''agricultural modernization''. (…) There is, therefore, a need to explain technological change in terms of a dynamic process which seeks to transform not only the agrarian structures within peasant economies but also the social and political formations within rural communities.
