Histological and Immunohistochemical Analyses of Repair of the Disc in the Rabbit Temporomandibular Joint Using a Collagen Template

Abstract: A previous study demonstrated that the reconstituted type I collagen matrix extracted from rabbit tendons enabled the TMJ disc to regenerate in the rabbit. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the extracellular matrix (ECM) and mechanisms of regeneration in the TMJ disc. In 36 New Zealand rabbits that underwent a partial discectomy, discs were replaced with reconstituted collagen templates for 3 months. A histological analysis showed that moderate to severe degeneration appeared in partially dis… Show more

“…In animal models of TMJ damage, natural collagen (Kobayashi et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2017), synthesized PLGA (Zhu et al, 2011;Dormer et al, 2011), polylactic acid (Ahtiainen et al, 2013), and polycaprolactone (PCL) (Tarafder et al, 2016) were fabricated into scaffolds, whereas Pluronic F-127-based hydrogel supported regenerative cell implantation (Yu et al, 2011;Sun et al, 2018). For cells in the systems, articular chondrocytes, costal chondrocytes, whole bone marrow, bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs), and adipose stem cells (Ahtiainen et al, 2013) were adopted.…”

“…The rabbit model offers an intermediate sized tissue for assessment at a moderate price. There has been both full meniscus replacement [25] and partial meniscus replacement [26][27][28][29] studies in the rabbit. Again, the size of the animal prevented any mechanical testing of the regenerated tissue, and all results were histological or biochemical.…”
