During the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic, a test of samples collected through naso/oropharyngeal swab was set up; for this aim new swabs were developed. Materials and methods: The laboratory New Nanodiagnostics srl (Modena - Italy) analyzed nine different types of swabs used to collect human organic material for PCR diagnostic test for the SARS-CoV-2 infection. The swabs were observed under Optical Microscope and analyzed by Field Emission Gun Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (FEGE-SEM) coupled with an Energy Dispersive System (EDS), to verify their morphology and chemical composition. Three different morphologies and nanostructures, along with their chemical composition were identified. Surprisingly enough, the presence of identified chemical contaminants like Titanium-Silicon-Aluminum or Silicon- Aluminium-Chromium-Manganese does not be understandable nor is it explained in the data sheet. Some fibers also present a nanostructured coating of Silicon-Zirconium. This might be of concern, as their presence could invalidate the accuracy of the PCR testing. In addition to that, the biocompatibility of the medical devices is discussed since a particular tendency of the glassy fibers to break has been verified. The presence of broken fibers in the nasal and oropharyngeal mucosa can cause irreversible damages. Finally, after their use, the swabs must be incinerated and their fumes contribute to the increase of the environmental pollution.

Purpose. To evaluate the role of porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) in reducing fistula during urethroplasty and to observe its degradation process in beagle models. Methods. 22 male beagles were divided into the SIS group and control group. All animals received surgical operation to establish the hypospadias model. Urethroplasty was followed. In the SIS group, the urethra was covered with a single-layer SIS material while no SIS material covered in the control group. At the 2nd, 4th, and 12th weeks after the operation, there were 3, 3, and 5 animals in each group, respectively, sacrificed for surgical site histological examinations. The inflammation reaction and collagen hyperplasia levels were assessed. The fistula was identified by retrograde cystourethrography at the 4th and 12th weeks after the operation. Results. the incidence of urethral fistula was 25% (2/8) in the SIS group and 75% (6/8) in the control group. The inflammation reaction of SIS and control groups had no significant difference ( U = 52.50 , P = 0.58 ). The collagen fiber increased in both groups; however, the SIS group had a much more gentle increase compared to the control group ( U = − 0.00 , P < 0.001 ). In the SIS group, the SIS material was roughly complete on the specimens 2 w after surgery but became loose and discontinuous 4 w after surgery and could not be found 12 w after surgery. Conclusion. The material can decrease the incidence of urethral fistula in the animal models, when used as a coverage layer. The SIS degradation process started 2 w–4 w after the operation and finished before 12 w in the animal model.

Fibrosis represents a relevant response to the implantation of biomaterials, which occurs not only at the tissue–material interface (fibrotic encapsulation) but also within the void fraction of complex three‐dimensional (3D) biomaterial constructions (fibrotic ingrowth). Usual evaluation of the biocompatibility mostly depicts fibrosis at the interface of the biomaterial using semiquantitative scores. Here, the relations between encapsulation and infiltrating fibrotic growth are poorly represented. Virtual pathology and digital image analysis provide new strategies to assess fibrosis in a more differentiated way. In this study, we adopted a method previously used to quantify fibrosis in visceral organs to the quantification of fibrosis to 3D biomaterials. In a proof‐of‐concept study, we transferred the “Collagen Proportionate Area” (CPA) analysis from hepatology to the field of biomaterials. As one task of an experimental animal study, we used CPA analysis to quantify the fibrotic ingrowth into a filamentous scaffold after subcutaneous implantation. We were able to demonstrate that the application of the CPA analysis is well suited as an additional fibrosis evaluation strategy for new biomaterial constructions. The CPA method can contribute to a better understanding of the fibrotic interactions between 3D scaffolds and the host tissue responses.
