Histological Investigation of Methacrylate Embedded Bone Marrow Biopsy Specimens; Correlation With Survival After Conventional Treatment in 15 Adult Patients

Abstract: Aplastic anaemia is a rare disease with a poor prognosis: 40% of the patients die within 6 months after diagnosis. The clinical condition and laboratory data show only a poor correlation with the chance of survival for longer than 6 months. Conventional bone marrow biopsy investigations did not have any predictive value, but methyl-methacrylate embedded biopsy material from 15 patients given only supportive care showed histological features considered important for the assessment of the prognosis. In 3 micron … Show more

“…Methyl methacrylate (MMA) has been used with great success for routine undecalcified bone histology for nearly forty years (Schenk 1965, Burkhardt, 1966Te Velde, 1977). However, enzyme-and immunohistochemistry in MMA embedded sections remains difficult and thus without wide-spread acceptance.…”

“…En los últimos años se esta tratando de encontrar parámetros de respuesta a la terapia inmunosupresora en la biopsia de hueso de los pacientes con AAS (40) (51) (52). TeVeld y Haak (52) propusieron que el grado de infiltrado inflamatorio en la médula ósea puede ser mayor en algunos casos con respuesta inmune activa; lo que sugeriría que un alto grado de infiltrado inflamatorio pudiera predecir una respuesta favorable a la terapia inmunosupresora en pacientes con AAS.…”

“…The value of the Lynch-and also Najean-index was as sessed by several authors in recent years. Wehinger and Lencer [1977] found the Lynch-index valuable for identification of high-risk cases dying within 6 months af ter diagnosis, whereas Te Velde and Haak [1977] judged the Lynch-index to have no more predictive value than the clinical im pression. According to Sleijjeret al [1981] the Lynch-as well as the Najean-index are less reliable than the prognostic systems of Camitta et al [1975] and Lohrmann et al [ 1976].…”
