Histomorphometric characterization of subgemmal neurogenous plaques

Abstract: SNPs are normal neural structures located on the posterior border of the tongue that represent a non-neoplastic regional anatomic variation. In some cases, signs or symptoms may be present, and further investigation should be performed. Pathologists should be aware of this entity to avoid confusion with neural lesions.

“…The presence of subgemmal neurogenous plaque was reported by Custodio et al in 40% (6/15) of cases of OLEC located on the lateral border of the tongue. Pellicioli et al evaluated 28 cases of subgemmal neurogenous plaque, and only two (7.1%) were associated with OLEC. A significant amount of subgemmal neurogenous plaque was found in the present study but was not associated with symptoms.…”

“…The following microscopic characteristics were analyzed: association with lymphoid tissue (see criteria below), clear separation from surrounding tissues (no/yes), type of the cystic epithelium (stratified non‐keratinized/stratified parakeratinized/other), epithelial alterations (none/hyperplasia/atrophy/ hyperplasia and atrophy), cystic epithelial connection (no/yes, with oral mucosa epithelium or with glandular ductal epithelium), locularity (single cavity/two or more cavities), and cystic content (none, empty/desquamate cells/keratin/amorphous eosinophilic material/inflammatory cells [lymphocytes and plasma cells; neutrophils; or both]/red blood cells). The presence of subgemmal neurogenous plaque, defined as a neurofibroma‐like spindle cell proliferation with an overlying epithelium containing taste buds, was investigated for tongue lesions.…”
