Histopathological and histoenzymatic studies on bronchopneumonia in sheep

Abstract: To characterize the pneumonic lesions of sheep in Kashmir Valley, India, 257 lungs were collected and processed for routine histopathological examination. Histoenzymatic study was also performed to ascertain the activity of alkaline and acid phosphatases in and around the various lesions. The pneumonic lungs were characterized as acute bronchopneumonia, chronic bronchopneumonia, fibrinous bronchopneumonia, suppurative bronchopneumonia, and interstitial bronchopneumonia. Mast cell hyperplasia and fibroplasia we… Show more

“…In agreement with the present finding, previous investigations in other countries also reported bronchopneumonia as the commonest type of pneumonia in sheep and goats [28, 29, 31, 32]. The gross and histological lesions of the different forms of bronchopneumonia were consistent with the findings of other studies [11, 33–36]. The lesions could be associated with contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (in goats) or pneumonic pasteurellosis as these diseases are characterized by fibrinous and suppurative bronchopneumonia patterns [4, 37, 38].…”

“…Interstitial pneumonia was the second dominant type of pneumonia in this study detected in 41.9% of the pneumonic animals. The gross and histopathological characteristics of the lesions in the affected lungs were similar to earlier reports [11, 49, 50]. It was appreciated in both species; however, the proportion was considerably higher in sheep (51.2 %) than in goats (29.7 %).…”

“…The pathological lesions of pneumonic lung tissues in the present study were similar to those in the previous studies on pasteurellosis (14,15). Akloul and Menoueri (16) also recorded consolidation in the whole of the apical lobe of the pneumonic lung with bacterial infections, which supports the findings of the present study.…”

“…The higher frequency of lesions on the right side of the lung and the increased vulnerability of apical and cardiac lobes are similar to those described by Alley (1975), Haziroglu (1994, Ozyildiz et al (2012) and Dar et al (2014); this is a special form of pneumonia called chronic or atypical pneumonia.…”
