Historical floods and dendrochronological dating of a wooden deck in the Old Mint of Segovia, Spain

Abstract: During recent archaeological work carried out in the 16th-century Segovia Mint, Spain, a wooden deck of Pinus sylvestris was revealed covering the hydraulic canals. Dendrochronological analyses allowed us to estimate the dates that trees were felled in order to effect repairs to canals damaged after extraordinary flood events. There are at least three age clusters: (1) 1677-1678; (2) 1690-1698-1700; and (3) 1713-1720-1721-1742. By comparing dendrochronological data with both documentary records of repair work … Show more

“…wood from the "Old Mint" in Segovia (Génova et al, 2011). This record of pointer years in Central Spain provides information regarding their significance and distribution over the last 405 years, which can be contrasted with other extensive dendrochronological records of Pinus from throughout Spain (Andreu et al, 2007;Bogino et al, 2009;Génova, 1998;Fernández, 1998-1999;Génova et al, 2009) in order to characterise anomalies of growth, indicating macroclimatic events in the Iberian Peninsula.…”

“…Génova et al (2011) carried out the dendrochronological dating of wood that formed a deck covering the hydraulic canals of the Old Mint, Segovia. The age of the wood was used to identify at least three periods between 1583 and 1771, during which timber was cut to repair the deck.…”

“…To apply dendrochronological techniques to reconstruct past flood events in Mediterranean rivers, especially highmagnitude floods, which are important to verify flow regime reconstructions, and in general highly relevant in riparian ecology (Zielonka et al, 2008;Ballesteros Cánovas et al, 2011;Génova et al, 2011).…”
