Historical Perspective on Fluid Machinery Flow Optimization in an Industry

Abstract: Fluid-dynamic design of fluid machinery had heavily relied on empiricism and experimental observations for many years. Since 1980s, thanks to the advancements in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a variety of flow physics have been revealed. The contribution by CFD is indispensable; however, the challenge is required not only on the advancements in CFD technologies but also innovation of "design (optimization) technologies" because of the complex interactions between 3-D flow fields and the complex 3-D flow … Show more

“…However, it is not easy to visualize the Pareto space if there are more than four objectives. SOM (Self-Organizing Map) are usually used to visualize the optimization results when there are four and more objectives [31,32]. SOM is a type of artificial neural network (ANN) not only for visualization but also for the intelligent compression of sample data.…”

“…Therefore only 8 parameters are needed to define a complex 3D blade shape, which greatly reduces the degree of freedom in optimization process compared to a direct design approach [20]. Furthermore, each design generated by inverse design method will satisfy the specified Euler head through the specified spanwise .…”

“…In the design stage, Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology has been applauded for its role in facilitating early design changes during the NPD process (Holmström, Liotta, and Chaudhuri 2017). In the flow handling equipment industry, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology, is an analysis tool for monitoring and predicting flow behaviour functions by applying the equations of motion using discretised elements of a numerical model to analyse flow behaviour in a system (Asim, Charlton, and Mishra 2017) thereby saving costs by reducing over-reliance on experimental activities (Dhotre et al 2013;Goto 2016). CFD has been applied to various flow handling applications and is also useful in investigating flow path geometry changes for flow optimisation (Asim et al 2019).…”
