“…The first of these clumsily applied the already limited technique of "straw polls", while in the second the supposedly representative sample of "presentday Cameroonian society" comprised "200 people" living in Douala or Yaoundé and the respondents were asked to "give reasons for their answers" even when the questions were closed or given in multiple choice form (Engueleguele 2000). The third poll applied a newfangled version of the random sampling method, first used in 1985 in another context by Anders Kiaer, which offers the possibility of safely substituting a part for the whole provided that, in the sampling procedure, respondents are selected at random (with regard to this method, see the criticism of its limitations and its replacement by, inter alia, the "representative method", in Desrosières 1993, Kruskal & Mosteller 1980, Meyer 1991, Seng 1951 8. This remark was made by a senior Cameroonian officer.…”
