Historically Based Room Acoustic Analysis and Auralization of a Church in the 1470s

Abstract: Worship space acoustics have been established as an important part of a nation’s cultural heritage and area of acoustic research, but more research is needed regarding the region of northern Europe. This paper describes the historical acoustics of an important abbey church in Sweden in the 1470s. A digital historical reconstruction is developed. Liturgical material specific to this location is recorded and auralized within the digital reconstruction, and a room acoustic analysis is performed. The analysis is g… Show more

“…Other studies have demonstrated that the influence of clappers with different mechanical properties on church bells can be identified through parametric calculations [28]. Furthermore, researchers created a digital history reconstruction system through the application of acoustic technology simulation to restore the sounds of various religious ceremonies [88] and liturgies [95].…”

“…Extreme situations can however highlight the effect of acoustic feedback. Performing or recording music in an anechoic chamber not only impacts the reflection of sound, but also the experience of performing and thereby the performance itself ( Freiheit, 2010 ; Autio et al, 2021 ). My own experience of playing flute inside an anechoic chamber was a physically (and musically) very unpleasant and “unreal” experience.…”
