“…Other studies with the Y-chromosome, 38,42 and also with other genetic markers, have detected this Northwest African influence in northern Iberia. For instance, Basque and Berber Algerians share some infrequent HLA haplotypes, 20 and Basques, but also Cantabrians and French from the Pyrenees, share African-specific GM immunoglobulin haplotypes. 54 Moreover, haplotypes belonging to the Northwest African U6 mtDNA cluster have been found in Galicia and Northern Portugal, but are rare or absent in Southern areas.…”

“…The compilation of classical genetic markers (Bosch et al 1997;Simoni et al 1999) has shown a clear genetic differentiation between the northern and southern coasts, attributed to independent parallel expansions along the two shores followed by little gene flow across the Mediterranean. Nevertheless, there is some contradictory data, based on HLA polymorphisms, on the degree of genetic relationship between both coasts in West Mediterranean populations (Arnaiz-Villena et al 1995;Comas et al 1998). Analyses of autosomal STRs and Alu insertion polymorphisms confirmed the genetic difference between both groups of populations, also detecting some Sub-Saharan genetic flow into NW African populations.…”

“…Twenty different HLA-DRB1 and eleven different HLA-DQB1 alleles were found in Tenerife Island sample ( NJ relatedness dendrogram based on HLA-DRB1 allele frequencies (Fig.4) et al, 2004), Souss-Berber (Izaabel et al,, 1978), Moroccan (Gomez-Casado et al, 2000) and Algerians (Arnaiz-Villena et al, 1995). (Imanishi et al, 1991c), Wales (Darke et al, 1998) and Northwest England (Alfirevic et al, 2012).…”
