“…and contemporary eras. In the Iberian era in SU 4, it appeared in conjunction with high values of Glomus and anthropogenic nitrophilous herbs (primarily Cardueae and Cichorioideae), associated with deforestation‐mediated erosion (declining numbers of evergreen Quercus ) and farming (Tallón‐Armada et al, , p. 35). Physical‐chemical analysis also detected higher Ca levels in SU 4 than in the rest of the sequence, possibly denoting practices such as fertilization or liming (Ferro‐Vázquez, Martínez‐Cortizas, Nóvoa‐Muñoz, Ballesteros‐Arias & Criado‐Boado, 2014, p. 28).…”

“…Before radiocarbon analysis, soil samples (3B, 2Ab, Ah‐C) were treated in the Department of Edaphology and Organic Chemistry of the University of Santiago de Compostela. The fine earth fraction (<2 mm) was shaken in ultrapure distilled water for 16 hr, and the suspension filtrated using a 50‐mm mesh‐size sieve, thereby removing sand, roots, and large undecomposed organic remains (Ferro‐Vázquez, Martínez‐Cortizas, Nóvoa‐Muñoz, Balleteros‐Arias, & Criado‐Boado, ; Kaal, Martínez Cortizas, Buurman, & Criado Boado, ; Tallón‐Armada et al, ). The charcoal sample (Terrace 0, on top of horizon 2C2) was obtained through flotation with a floating tank equipped with a 0.5 mm mesh.…”
