Homogeneity of Prototypical Attributes in Soccer Teams

Abstract: Research indicates that the homogeneous perception of prototypical attributes influences several intragroup processes. The aim of the present study was to describe the homogeneous perception of the prototype and to identify specific prototypical subcategories, which are perceived as homogeneous within sport teams. The sample consists of N = 20 soccer teams with a total of N = 278 athletes (age M = 23.5 years, SD = 5.0 years). The results reveal that subcategories describing the cohesiveness of the team and mot… Show more

“…In contrast, a team's offensive capacity is determined by the output of the best-performing member. Moreover, the distribution of a team's offensive (defensive) performance can be measured by the network heterogeneity (homogeneity) [9,10]. Low heterogeneity (or high homogeneity) indicates that all players share a similar level of interaction through the match, and vice versa.…”

“…In terms of social identity, humour is one of many prototypical attributes which are used by team members to describe their social identity. 29 Even if Zepp and Kleinert 29 did not find a significant relationship between humour as prototypical team attribute and team identification, it is however theoretical reasonable to assume that coaches use of humour may be related to team identity. Humour is considered a non-serious incongruity that is shared in practice or in relation to competition, where the purpose is the intentional amusement of individuals or the team.…”
