“…Few in our sample (11.4%) abstained from anal sex entirely during the preceding 12 months, a lower percentage than that observed elsewhere (Hart et al, 1999). In Project SIGMA, Hunt et al (1991) and Davies et al (1992) reported 12-month anal-abstinence rates of over 30% for men with a similar average age.…”

“…Most previous national surveys have reported rates of HIV testing of less than 30%, 13 but these studies were conducted in the early 1990s and it is possible that the higher reported prevalence of HIV testing in Australia is a reflection of the greater time available for respondents to be tested. However, in Australia, HIV testing among people at risk of HIV has been a central component of HIV prevention strategies, in the belief that knowledge of one's HIV result will lead to changes in personal behaviours that put one at risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV.…”

“…12 In Scotland, in a non-random sample of homosexually active men, 36% had ever had an STI and 11% had an STI in the previous year. 13 A non-random survey of nearly 7,000 lesbians in the US revealed that 17% had ever had an STI, with older women more likely to report an STI.…”

“…Epidemiological and behavioural studies provide compelling evidence for the continuing transmission of HIV infection among gay men in the UK (Dodds et al, 2000;Hart et al, 1999;PHLS, 2001). HIV prevention clearly remains a priority, especially among gay men in London, where the majority of new HIV diagnoses are reported (PHLS, 2001).…”
