Honeybee royal jelly inhibits autoimmunity in SLE-prone NZB × NZW F1 mice

Abstract: Royal jelly (RJ) is a gelatinous secretion from young nurse worker bees (Apis mellifera), which serves as the sole food for the queen bee. Because of its pleiotropic functions for queen bees, RJ has also been used as a dietary supplement with various health benefits for humans. Because RJ is being indicated to have immunomodulatory potential for humans, we undertook the study to determine whether the oral administration of RJ could alter the development of systemic autoimmunity in New Zealand Black (NZB) x New… Show more

“…Mice that received RJ showed decreased proteinuria and a prolongation of lifespan. RJ caused a significant decrease in the serum level of IL-10, and in the autoantibodies against ssDNA, dsDNA, and erythrocytes, as well as a reduction in the number of splenic autoreactive B cells (9). …”

“…Royal Jelly is a hive product rich in bioactive compounds with various biological properties and effects: antioxidative (Guo et al, 2005(Guo et al, , 2009Jamnik et al, 2007;Silici et al, 2009; DelkhosheKasmaie et al, 2014), antiaging (Inoue et al, 2003), tonic (Fossati, 1972), antimicrobial (Fontana et al, 2004;Romanelli et al, 2011), immunomodulatory (Mannoor et al, 2009), anti-inflammatory (Kohno et al, 2004(Kohno et al, , 2015, neurotrophic, hypoglicaemic, hypocholesterolaemic (Kamakura et al, 2006;Kashima et al, 2014), vasodilative (Tokunaga et al, 2004), antitumoral, anti-allergic (Okamoto et al, 2003).…”

“…Various mouse SLE models have been applied to investigate this disease, including spontaneous models, such as NZB × NZW F1, MRL-lpr/lpr mice, and drug-induced models. [12][13][14][15][16] 2, 6, 10, 14tetramethylpentadecane (TMPD), which is also known as pristine, has been widely used to induce murine models of SLE. [17][18][19][20] TMPDtreated mice show many clinical features of human lupus, including glomerulonephritis, arthritis, immune complex deposition, and autoantibody production.…”
