Hospitalization costs of coronaviruses diseases in upper-middle-income countries: A systematic review

Abstract: Background COVID-19, SARS and MERS are diseases that present an important health burden worldwide. This situation demands resource allocation to the healthcare system, affecting especially middle- and low-income countries. Thus, identifying the main cost drivers is relevant to optimize patient care and resource allocation. Objective To systematically identify and summarize the current status of knowledge on direct medical hospitalization costs of SARS, MERS, or COVID-19 in Upper-Middle-Income Countries. Me… Show more

“…Finally, not to be underestimated are the indirect costs of the disease (i.e., within the profile of COPD/asthma patients) due to the loss of productivity and premature retirement of patients. The importance of these aspects is highlighted by the vast amount of literature dealing with the magnitude of resources needed to treat patients with these severe disorders, and with the public health measures taken by the world governments to face their impact on human psychology, the educational system, and the global economy [ 74 , 75 , 76 , 77 , 78 ]. How can proteomics alleviate these issues?…”

“…Hospitalization is one of the most expensive aspects of healthcare service, accounting for one‐third of the total healthcare expenditure in the United States. 1 , 2 , 3 Many health and insurance organizations have attempted to minimize the hospitalization rate by implementing preventive policies, 4 with various clinical and epidemiological factors affecting this index. 5 , 6 , 7 In recent years, several studies have demonstrated the substantial impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on hospitalization rates.…”

“…Despite more than 2 years having passed since the start of the health crisis, the economic and social levels reached in December 2019 have still not been achieved [ 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Although research efforts are being made extensively in this field, only a limited number of studies describing the economic impact of this disease are available [ 4 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. There is considerable heterogeneity across costing methodologies (simulation, absolute costs, etc.).…”

“…There is considerable heterogeneity across costing methodologies (simulation, absolute costs, etc.). We observed a great variation in costs per patient, making comparison challenging even among countries with similar economic status [ 26 , 27 , 28 ]. However, no studies have performed a comparative analysis of ‘intra-hospital’ costs, especially for the costs incurred in important areas such as the emergency department, hospitalisation, and intensive care unit of the same hospital, between 2019 (pre-pandemic) and 2020 (first year of the pandemic).…”
