How accurately do mechanophores report on bond scission in soft polymer materials?

Abstract: Mechanophores are molecules that are incorporated into a host material and react to the local mechanical condition—the state of stress or strain—of that host material. Among their many purposes is that of a reporter: Mechanophores whose optical activity changes in response to mechanical cues can reveal bulk material processes that are ordinarily hidden, such as fatigue and fracture. Moreover, they may do so well before a material is fully fractured. To extract quantitative information from the optical signals … Show more

“…3A). Given that the probability to break a polymer chain diverges near its limiting extensibility, we considered  xyz as representative of the fraction of bond scission events in the filler network [this hypothesis has been verified in previous work (19) and theoretically described by Dubach et al (30)]. Averaging along the crack length x and specimen thickness z (see Fig.…”

“…In classical models of polymer chain elasticity, force is dependent on the ratio of end-to-end distance and contour length. Therefore, in an elastomeric network, the distribution of tension has been proposed to depend on the strand length dispersity, where, on average, short and long strands experience larger and smaller forces, respectively. , This and other factors are expected to result in a very broad tension distribution that has a long tail extending into high forces. Simulations reported by Adhikari and Makarov suggest, for example, that the high-force tails may take the form of an exponential force distribution, with an observable portion of strands experiencing tension that is 6–8 times greater than the average force within the network . The topology described by the relative contributions of entanglements and covalent crosslinking influenced the details of the distribution.…”

“…For example, Storm and co-workers investigated the conditions at which OFPs (which are intrinsically designed to contain bonds that cleave at an increased rate compared to other bonds) overor underreport overall bond scission events in bulk materials. 25 ■ SUSTAINABLE POLYMER CHEMISTRY Plastic waste constitutes one of the central and most visible arguments to develop sustainable approaches to materials. Since this topic is at the heart of chemistry, polymer chemists perform sustainability research in three general directions: (i) to prolong the life cycle of a given material, (ii) to achieve sustainable syntheses of polymers, and (iii) to efficiently degrade and/or recycle polymers (Figure 2).…”

“…It will be necessary at every instance to critically evaluate the quality of the obtained data and how they relate to the formulated scientific hypothesis. For example, Storm and co-workers investigated the conditions at which OFPs (which are intrinsically designed to contain bonds that cleave at an increased rate compared to other bonds) over- or underreport overall bond scission events in bulk materials …”
