How Applicable Are Ages and Stages Questionnaires for Use With Turkish Children?

Abstract: The majority of eligible children cannot access early intervention services in Turkey, often because they are not assessed. The authors adapted the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) for Turkish children ages 3 to 72 months. Study participants consisted of 375 children who were classified as at risk for developmental delays, 564 children considered not at risk for developmental delays (both groups according to standardized assessments), and 39 children with known disabilities. The ROC analyses indicated that… Show more

“…However, there is debate regarding this in recent research because with a performance below the cut off in two or more domains, the ASQ specificity increases [11][12][13] , while efficiency overall improves when the total score is considered 13,14 . Independent from the approach, it has been observed that when parents conduct the assessment, the search for possible development disorders significantly increases 2,15 , anticipating up to 30% referral increase among evaluated children 8,16 .…”

“…At the moment of fi nishing study, cross-sectional evaluation of their development was done by the parent and assistant, completing questionnaires based on the Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ-3), adopted in a way described by Kapci et al (17), and use it as part of the project of introducing early intervention programs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We decided to base our neurodevelopmental assessment on this parent-completed developmental and social-emotional screener questionnaire because of its highly valid, reliable and accurate results that span across the spectrum of ages, since we did not have enough patients in the age group above 18 or 24 months.…”
