How Charisma Is Perceived from Speech: A Multidimensional Approach

Abstract: A leader's charisma is conveyed by various multiple aspects of his perceivable behavior among which the acousticprosodic characteristics of speech. We present here a study on the perception of charisma in political speech that aims to investigate the notion of charisma and to validate a theoretical framework on a multidimensional scale of charisma perception. The study points out that a multidimensional approach of charisma allows to better analyze which factors are related to specific aspects of speech. We fi… Show more

“…One consistent finding in previous studies is that more charismatic speech is characterized by higher F0 values [13][14][15][16][17]. In this paper, we investigate this F0 raising more closely by looking at prosodic details of pitch accents.…”

“…Phonetic researchers identified, with a focus on political speakers, a number of acoustic-prosodic features that correlate (in culture-specific ways) with speaker charisma, such as the level, range, and variability of F0 and intensity, speaking rate, and the utterance-to-pause duration ratio. Previous phonetic studies also broke down charisma into simpler adjectives with which the relevant acoustic-prosodic features are strongly correlated [13,14,15,16,17,18,19].…”

“…To address the former, we created a questionnaire in previous works [9,10] to assess the perception of charisma from voice, which allows to distinguish various dimensions of charisma in voice.…”

“…Based on these criteria, a scale was developed to measure the above qualities in a leader [9]. In a qualitative study, a questionnaire on charisma was submitted to 133 participants (42 female and 16 male French people, 65 female and 10 male Italians), asking them to freely define what charisma is and what it is not, and to list public figures they considered as charismatic and non-charismatic.…”

“…Phonetic studies have shown that acoustic-prosodic parameters are positively correlated with perceived speaker charisma (Strangert and Gustafson, 2008;Rosenberg and Hirschberg, 2009;Signorello et al, 2012;D'Errico et al, 2013;Niebuhr et al, 2016Niebuhr et al, , 2018. For example, higher F0 levels, larger F0 ranges, and faster speaking rates make speakers sound more charismatic.…”
