“…The Knowledge Gap Hypothesis (Tichenor et al, 1970) has been shown to explain gender differences in online political engagement (Ahmed & Madrid-Morales, 2020) suggesting confidence is a factor. Furthermore, women were found to discuss politics to develop ideas and understanding as opposed to the male trait of sharing opinions (Malinen et al, 2020) suggesting lower levels of certainty about their stance, demonstrating the link between internal efficacy, self-perceived knowledge, and external efficacy, the capacity to have influence. The fact that political efficacy is found to be lower among women unless they have strong ideological beliefs (Heger & Hoffmann, 2021) reinforces this perspective.…”
