The growing number of research studies on the application of translation in language learning has shown that this topic is getting popular among education research groups. It is a challenging task for a non-native speaker to learn a foreign language, especially if the grammar of the student's dominant language is different from the grammar of the foreign language. Among the many methods employed in foreign language learning, the translation method continues to remain a controversial issue. This study is primarily designed to understand the role of translation for non-native speakers in the learning of German as a foreign language, specifically in ascertaining students' beliefs about using translation in their studies of the foreign language, and to find out the learning strategies, which involve translation. A total of 60 Malaysian undergraduates studying German as a foreign language in a public university participated in this study. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire on the use of translation in learning German language and semi-structured interview. It can be concluded from the findings of the study that the majority of the participants believed that the use of translation is a helping strategy for learning the German language. Although a small number of the participants preferred to learn the German language without using translation, they agreed that translation really helped to develop their learning strategy, especially in a situation where they did not understand the German language spoken by their lecturer in class. It is hoped that the findings of this study will shed light on the use of translation in teaching and learning the German language.

PurposeThe way to produce an equivalent translation text appears hard that every translation work should engage with diverse language and cultural systems. The issues are expected to affect both translation students and professional translators. Therefore, this current work aims to discover in-depth information about translation equivalence degrees among Indonesian EFL undergraduate students.MethodThis study employed qualitative content analysis. The research data included documentation of the translation texts from English into the Indonesian language, which resulted in 22 students majoring in English education at a public university in Banten Province, Indonesia. The source language texts were derived from the news-item texts published in national newspapers. The data analysis procedure comprised comparing the two texts, classifying, discussing, drawing conclusions, and making interpretations. Results/findingsThe study of the translation texts revealed that 11 texts (50%) referred to near-optimal translation, six texts (27%) to partial translation, and five texts (23%) to poor translation.ConclusionGiven that none of the students' translation outputs achieved the optimal equivalency; this conclusion suggests that students' translation knowledge and skills still need to be improved by regular practice and discussion at each translation course meeting.

This research aims to investigate the impact of total physical response-storytelling (TPRS) and grammartranslation (G-T) methods on the elementary school third grade students' acquisition of English vocabulary and the views of elementary school third grade students on these methods. In this embedded mixed-methods study, the data were collected from 49 elementary school third grade students in an elementary school selected by convenience in Kadınhanı/Konya, Turkey. For the analysis of the data which were collected through the Vocabulary Acquisition Test and student diaries, independent-and related-samples t tests and descriptive analysis were utilized. It is concluded that the TPRS method is effective in the experimental group students' vocabulary acquisition; the G-T method is effective in the control group students'; and that the TPRS method is not a more/less effective method than the G-T method in terms of vocabulary acquisition. In addition, most students in both groups reflect positive views on both methods in their diaries kept throughout the intervention.
