How Do Non-Agricultural Employment and Regional Selection Affect Farmers’ Domestic Sewage Discharge Behavior? Empirical Evidence from Rural China

Abstract: In many countries, along with rising rural labor transfer, the problem of rural domestic sewage discharge is becoming increasingly serious due to labor shortages in the villages. It is urgent to solve the environment pollution and health problems of residents which is caused by the massive discharge of domestic sewage in rural areas. Based on the survey data collected from Nanjing Agricultural University in 2020, this paper employs the ordered probit model and the CMP method, to empirically test the impact of … Show more

“…The higher the proportion of farm employment, the higher the willingness of farmers to adopt RBAF. Compared with studies on an off-farm labor force, this result is contrary to the conclusion of Issahaku et al [72], Gedikoglu and McCann [73], and Ju et al [74], that the higher the proportion of off-farm labor, the higher the possibility of adopting environmental protection behavior. This study speculates the following reason: In addition to mechanical factors, the RBAF needs to rely on more manpower for recycling.…”

“…35 These contaminants mostly come from human and naturally occurring sources, such as sewage discharge that is not under control, among others. 36 They have been shown to affect the metabolic processes of many different systems, including those of flora, fauna, and humans. 37 Table 1 gives the toxicity level of various inorganic pollutants present in wastewater along with its impact on human health.…”
