How Do Nurses Keep Children Safe From Abuse and Neglect, and Does it Make a Difference? A Scoping Review

Abstract: This review demonstrated nurses prevent, detect and respond to abuse and neglect in many ways. However, given mixed evidence and absence of some nurse interventions in the literature, further research is needed to represent the range of ways that nurses keep children safe and determine their effectiveness.

“…The full text of all the selected articles was read. In line with previous scoping reviews (e.g., Lines et al, 2018 ; Kavoura and Kokkonen, 2020 ), thematic categories were developed, to answer the research question of this review. In this process, the authors followed an inductive and deductive approach of categorizing, inspired by Qualitative Content Analysis (Mayring, 2014 ).…”

“…Health professionals play a crucial role in identifying abuse and neglect cases and reporting suspected maltreatments to appropriate authorities (Thomas & Reeves, 2022). Nurses, the largest group of health professionals, are among the occupational groups in contact with children at increased risk of abuse and neglect (Lines et al, 2018). However, many studies have reported that nurses face barriers to reporting child maltreatment cases (Einboden et al, 2019; Elarousy & Abed, 2019; Lee & Kim, 2018).…”
