The present research points to an alternative concern against the mainstream research of future ports’ development by taking a transdisciplinary approach of a Living Lab (LL) concept for a better sustainability and innovation record in Small and Medium-Sized Ports (SMSPs). Deploying qualitative research for the examination of this new phenomenon of aggregating LLs into SMSPs, this research builds upon stakeholder workshops, in-depth interviews, and designed port pilots as case studies dedicated to innovation and sustainability transition in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) at the turn of 2030. Given its rich and significant empirical foundation, the present research substantially contributes to sustainability orientation and transitions in ports. The key original elements of this study are fourfold: (1) the research provides a theoretical and practical LL framework enabling innovation and sustainability to be grasped in ports in times of technological, social, and political disruption; (2) this research increases the minimal number of existing previous efforts studying SMSPs in the transitional discourse; (3) the paper addresses not only hard technological innovation concerns but also aspects of social acceptance and the role of social interactions; (4) the research goes beyond geographical boundaries of a single port, thus providing a joint and collaborative approach towards sustainability rather than an individual perception on sustainability transition, existing networks, and clusters.

The multiplication of apparently similar Innovation Labs throughout the local territories raises questions about their role and their positioning. Innovation Labs are generally supplied by local resources. This substantial growth could facilitate the connection of various regions within a territory, thereby creating new areas for experimentation. The public authorities need these labs to bring added value to their territory. This study shows that a network of Innovation Labs could be a strategic means to support territorial dynamics at a local scale. The literature does not provide concrete tools, resources, and methods to evaluate the territorial impacts of Innovation Labs. Furthermore, no literature review regarding the networking of Innovation Labs in a territory has yet been conducted. This paper begins to fill this gap and shows that the linking of innovation labs can support territorial dynamics. Through a review of the literature, research trends pertaining to territorial dynamics and innovation laboratories were identified. The contribution of this paper is the proposal of an approach to design a system of indicators to analyze a network of ILs adapted to a local territory as well as a portfolio of indicators. These results will allow us to follow the evolution of these labs, their interactions and their impacts on a local territory.

Objective: The objective of the study was to analyze projections that impact sustainable urban mobility for the year 2030 in small and medium-sized cities that use the bus as the main modal. Theoretical framework: The research brings perspectives to make urban mobility in small and medium-sized Brazilian cities more sustainable. Method: The Survey method was used; data collection through a questionnaire applied to public transport specialists in Brazil. In the data analysis, the calculation of the degree of agreement of the answers was used for 13 projections, in three aspects: probability of occurrence, business impact and the desire to occur. The averages of each category were also taken, plotted on a graph with X axis (probability of occurrence) and Y axis (impact on the transport sector). Results and conclusion: The results point to an increase in the use of semi-public transport, tariff changes and greater integration between the bus and more sustainable modes such as walking and cycling. For sustainable mobility, a greater interest in sustainability, investment in infrastructure, dedicated corridors and lanes, integration between modes, use of renewable energy and implementation of subsidy can be the key to environmental solutions. Research implications: The research contributed theoretically to the literature review and managerial and political questionnaire indicating the priority points for public and private investments. Originality/value: The research points out investment points to make urban mobility more sustainable and at the same time profitable for transport companies.
