How efficient is resveratrol as an antioxidant of the Mediterranean diet, towards alterations during the aging process?

Abstract: Mediterranean diet (MD) is the most relevant nutritional aspect of the multisecular Mediterranean civilisation which includes wine as an element of health and wellbeing when consumed with moderation. Mediterranean meals provide food micronutrients which include polyphenols, especially resveratrol from grape and red wine. MD, also called Cretan diet, has been proven to prevent diseases including cardiovascular pathologies, cancer, and to prevent aging. Interestingly, the grape and more precisely in grape skin c… Show more

“…Resveratrol has a protective effect on brain aging of the elderly. Its role on the microglial cells plays a central role in neuroinflammation [ 83 ]. Supplementation with resveratrol in rodents protected animals against HFD-induced body weight gain and obesity.…”

“…For these reasons, to evaluate the possible cytotoxic effects of compounds 1-7 and their effect on the cell proliferative capacity and to define a suitable concentration range, all the new synthesized compounds 1-7 were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity at three different concentrations (1, 10 and 100 ”M) via standard MTT assay, using C2C12 cell line ( Figure 3) [52,53]. Due to well-known antioxidant and neurodegenerative senescence prevention abilities in addition to enhancing the beneficial effects of physical exercise on the skeletal muscles of the elderly, RSV was used as reference compound [54,55]. The results showed that after 24 h of treatment at concentration of 1 and 10 ”M, 1-7 are not toxic for the cells respect to RSV at the same concentrations, even though they appeared to promote the cell proliferation without a common profile.…”

“…[13] This diet is characterized by high intake of vegetables, legumes, fruits, and whole grains; high intake of unsaturated fatty acids (mainly in the form of olive oil) compared with saturated fatty acids; a moderately high intake of fish; low to moderate intake of dairy products, meat, and poultry. Greater adherence to the MeD was related to lower risk of MS. [14] The leading hypotheses on the mechanism of such association are the antioxidant capacity of MeD [15] and omega 3-induced inhibitory reactions on Nuclear Factor kB (NF-kB) pathway. [16] Patients with chronic diseases such as MS suffer from difficulties related to their illness.…”
