How much doctoral research on clinical topics is published?: Table 1

Abstract: Research evidence associated with doctoral degrees is often left unpublished, across many settings. Sharing such evidence is a scientific and ethical duty. Supporting students in publishing preliminary work while they are still in doctoral programmes may be the most productive response. The large number of doctorates awarded in 'medical' disciplines every year represents a substantial investment in training and a resource for evidence-based medicine that should not be squandered.

“…This result was consistent with the one from another UK study on medical theses defended during 2000 and 2010 from 39 universities, showing that 52.4% of the 82 theses produced publications [37]. The obtained result could suggest a higher emphasis on study creation in PBTs than traditional theses, as it was expected given the purpose of the publication-based thesis.…”

“…Universities could also benefit from thesis-related articles' visibility in terms of institutional rankings and research funding. The PhD graduates could benefit from it as successful publishing of results from PhD studies in shorter time can enhance future scholarly activity [11] and increase the success of post-doctoral and grant applications [37]. Adopting publication-based doctoral routes (prospective and retrospective) may be considered a response to the growing pressure on doctoral students to publish during candidature.…”

“…Studies of text similarity in abstracts and titles have provided interesting approaches to detect papers derived from theses (Salmi et al 2001;Benotmane et al 2012;Caan and Cole 2012), although they have not been able to discern with clear evidence outputs emananting from theses. However, on the basis of full-text comparison of theses and articles of the same author, the Discussion section has demonstrated to be the essential part to identify the derivative articles.…”

“…Although the meaning of such a term may be thought to be broadly understood, the parameters under which a work become 'derivative' are often not well-defined (Caan and Cole 2012;Dhaliwal et al 2010). Output and derivative works are semantically related terms, used sometimes as synonyms.…”
