As a result of the research, the paper shows the essential need to take into account the social attributes of processes and phenomena in economy. From the standpoint of the interdisciplinary approach at various levels of the system three-hierarchy (micro-meso-macro) in economy, the following characteristics of social attributes are considered: “economic agent”, “expectations of the economic agent” and “preferences of the economic agent” taking into account their heteromorphism and heterogeneity, “intersubjective relations in economy”, “trust” between economic agents, “institutions”. The conclusions made as a result of the study make it possible to formulate the concept of selecting tools for economic and mathematical modeling of processes and phenomena at various levels of the system three-hierarchy (micro-meso-macro) in economy. Further studies will make it possible to select the most relevant tools for each level of the system three-hierarchy from the numerous apparatus used to model processes and phenomena in economy taking into account the concept proposed in this paper.

Paving the Way for Self-Employment: Does Society Matter?

This paper empirically investigates the extent to which institutional and individual factors predict the level of intention relating to self-employment. Arriving at a better understanding of intentions will assist to provide answers as to why ratios of self-employment are as they are and how public and economic policy may respond to an often perceived requirement to increase the level of self-employment. Using the dataset of 2017 Amway Global Entrepreneurship Research (AGER) for Austria, the United Kingdom, Italy, the United States, and Brazil this study finds that all variables predicting the intention to enter self-employment are significant at varying degree. The research explores the interplay between age, risk, gender, and education, on the one hand, and unemployment (OECD Labour Force Statistics) and political constitution as measured by the EFW index, on the other hand. Distinguishing between “no intention”, an “indifferent intention,” and a “strong intention” towards self-employment, the findings show that all variables can predict a willingness for self-employment in different, but significant, ways to comparable measures (an indifferent intention relative to no intention, and a strong intention to no intention). The paper concludes with an outlook to some more general perspectives of institutional economics and needs for further research.

Microfirms play a significant role in the Central/Eastern European economies, comprising 86% of the total amount of active firms. Development of microfirms is influenced by the local entrepreneurial environment. This article discusses the role of the local formal (regulations, local acts of law) and informal (customs, social norms and values) institutions in the development of microfirms. Synthetic exploration of the coexistence of formal and informal institutions on the example of Masovian and Swietokrzyskie voivodeships in Poland has been carried out. To present a multifaceted perspective, the following research methods were used: a survey among formal local institutions, individual indepth interviews with microfirms' owners and Regional Chambers of Commerce and also a case study on the local law acts. The findings suggest that the development instruments used by formal local institutions are inadequate for the needs of MF's. Furthermore, the crucial role of family support, and the importance of knowledge sharing has been found.

Abstract: Abstract:The statement 'institutions matter' has become commonplace. A precondition for it to be supported by empirical evidence is, however, that institutions are measurable. Some of the difficulties in measuring institutions are described and some ways of measuring them are proposed.
