“…Despite efficacy reported here, a number of questions remain unresolved and need to be assessed in controlled studies: effects of monodisciplinary vs multidisciplinary workshops, effects of more interactive training techniques, effects of training techniques teaching a broader range of CS, effects of modelling and effects of regular feedback on performed clinical skills in every day work. The usefulness of consolidation workshops, supervision workshops and coaching procedures in order to transfer learned CS to the clinical setting should be assessed for nurses, as it has been done recently for physicians (Razavi et al, 2003). The development of research focusing on training efficacy in terms of patients' benefits (Betz Brown et al, 1999) and cost utility is also needed, as this study supports the idea that improved HCP CS is directly related to patient increased satisfaction with care.…”

“…The training program was based on a previous communication skills training program which has been tested for its efficacy [35,36]. Sessions were spread over an 8-month period and were organized bimonthly in small groups (up to 7 participants).…”

“…For example, we do not know if the skill set of Empathic Communication did not change in our sample, as it has in other studies (e.g. [18,27,35]) because participants already had established a pattern of skill usage or because the skill set was not modifiable based on our teaching. Future studies should use more rigorous methodologies to explore what dose of training is necessary to see change sustained over time.…”

“…the coding systems used) varied widely. Seven of the 13 studies used one of two interaction analysis systems, the Medical Interaction Process System (MIPS) [66] and the Cancer Research Campaign Workshop Evaluation Manual (CRCWEM) [35]. The MIPS is a coding tool designed specifically for research purposes [67], while the CRCWEM is a research tool designed to assess the form, function and, content of transcribed utterances [68].…”
