Restrictions on physical movements and in-person encounters during the COVID-19 crisis confronted many qualitative researchers with challenges in conducting and completing projects requiring face-to-face fieldwork. An exploration of engaging in what we term ‘agile research’ in such circumstances can offer novel methodological insights for researching the social world. In this article, we discuss the changes we made to our ethnographic fieldwork in response to the introduction of a national lockdown to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. The ‘Living with Personal Data’ project, based in Sydney, Australia, and designed well before the advent of COVID-19, explores a diverse range of people’s feelings, practices and understandings concerning home-based digital devices and the personal digital data generated with their use. Using a video ethnography ‘home tour’ and an elicitation technique involving hand-drawn maps of people’s homes, digital devices and the personal data generated with and through these devices, this approach was designed to elicit the sensory, affective and relational elements of people’s digital device and personal data use at home. The fieldwork had just commenced when stay-at-home and physical distancing orders were suddenly introduced. Our article builds on and extends a growing body of literature on conducting fieldwork in the difficult conditions of the extended COVID-19 crisis by detailing our experiences of very quickly converting an ethnographic study that was planned to be in-person to a remote approach. We describe the adaptations we made to the project using video-call software and discuss the limits and opportunities presented by this significant modification.

Den här avhandlingen undersöker hur tekniklärande möjliggörs genom lärarledda konstruktionsaktiviteter i förskolan. Avhandlingen undersöker också hur förskollärarrollen och konstruktionsaktiviteternas utformning påverkades av olika historiska och samhälleliga strukturer samt i mötet mellan forskning och praktik.Avhandlingen bygger på en aktionsforskningsstudie som genomfördes tillsammans med en grupp förskollärare på två förskoleenheter. I syfte att utveckla den egna verksamheten genomförde gruppen tre olika konstruktionsaktiviteter som videofilmades och analyserades.Avhandlingens resultat pekar på att förskollärarna använde en rad olika teknikdidaktiska verktyg för att stötta barnen i sitt tekniklärande. Samtidigt visar resultatet att vissa barn fick betydligt större utrymme att påverka den problemlösning som skedde under aktiviteterna, medan andra barn inte hade lika stor möjlighet till en sådan påverkan. I denna process spelade både barnens snabbhet i att komma med förslag på lösningar och förskollärarnas bekräftelse av barnen en viktig roll. Resultatet pekar också på att förskollärarnas förgivettaganden om teknik, om barnen, om förskolan och om sin egen roll i aktiviteterna påverkade deras agerande. Studien visar även att utformningen av förskolans konstruktionsaktiviteter kan påverkas av både konstruktionsaktiviteternas förskolehistoria och teknikens genuskodning.Sammanfattningsvis pekar den här studien på att inta rollen som den aktive och guidande förskolläraren endast är det första steget om målet är att skapa konstruktionsaktiviteter som är så inkluderande som möjligt. Det gäller i förlängningen att som förskollärare reflektera över hur iscensättandet av dessa aktiviteter underlättar respektive begränsar barns olika handlingsutrymmen. Det handlar även om att förstå hur olika val påverkar de aktiviteter som iscensätts.Avhandlingen visar också att det kan finnas spänningsfält mellan forskaren och deltagarna i ett aktionsforskningsprojekt i förskolan. Det kan finnas maktstrukturer i mötet mellan forskare och deltagare som inte är helt enkla att hantera.

Addressing the Future with Data Visualization in Science Fiction Films: Dystopia or Utopia

The subject of the research is the methods and techniques of addressing the future in dystopian and utopian films. The object of research is visual effects and ways of displaying the future, which allow us to convey to the viewer the meaning of the narrative. In the process of research, special attention is paid to the possibilities of science fiction films that create another world with the help of special effects, emphasizing many themes and hidden ideas, while depicting a fairy tale. Special emphasis is placed on the fact that modern technologies, the possibilities of creating visual effects have changed the film industry, as a result of which it has strengthened the genre convergence of utopian and dystopian film products, as a result of which it has become possible to create plausible worlds so that science fiction films are perceived in a more immersive way. The main conclusions of the study are the conclusion that the modern tradition of visualizing science fiction films embraces and interweaves dystopias and utopias within the framework of one work, as a result of which the narratives are doubly fictional: they create a utopian or dystopian place as a backdrop for history, and at the same time the place itself becomes history. The author's special contribution lies in the fact that in the process of research, visual techniques of representing the future in cinematic fiction are highlighted, which invariably contain cultural meanings. The scientific novelty of the research is to identify and analyze the most typical techniques of reproducing the future in science fiction films using visual effects, which include brutalist architecture, creating an image of the future city.
