Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence for Designing Accessible Cultural Heritage

Abstract: This paper reviews the literature concerning technology used for creating and delivering accessible museum and cultural heritage sites experiences. It highlights the importance of the delivery suited for everyone from different areas of expertise, namely interaction design, pedagogical and participatory design, and it presents how recent and future artificial intelligence (AI) developments can be used for this aim, i.e.,improving and widening online and in situ accessibility. From the literature review analysi… Show more

“…Nevertheless, such intelligence gets efective only if archive-speciic training has been fulilled. Besides, since the determining process of machine learning, especially deep learning models, tend to operate as a łblack boxž [21], it appears necessary to stress human-centered modeling in combination with explainable AI in the computational design for ICH [127].…”

“…While preliminary research has started to study how human morality can impact the decision-making of future Artificial Intelligence systems, van Berkel et al, [40] contend that these approaches often treat human morals as static and immovable. Pisoni et al [41] also conducted a research review on using technologies in museums and cultural attractions to develop and deliver accessible experiences. Pisoni et al [41] emphasized the significance of delivering AI that is suitable for everyone from various fields of knowledge and experience, such as interaction design, pedagogical design, and participatory design, and it shows how recent and future AI advancements can be used to improve and broaden online and in-person accessibility.…”

De Cremer et al [42] also argued that the increasing usage of advanced systems has led us to a fork in the path.…”

“…On the other hand, AI is also a powerful tool for improving the accessibility of innovative digital services for people with a low level of digital literacy, notably the elderly, people with disabilities, and people living in underdeveloped areas. Usages in this direction are often mentioned in the literature, for example, in [34], where authors survey some works concerning the application of technology to the provision of accessible cultural heritage sites experiences, also highlighting the importance of the role of AI in adapting the offered experiences to the target audience. Moreover, most of the technologies that we presented for bridging the service-fruition gap rely on AI and ML as their core enablers.…”
