Human Health, Well-Being, and Global Ecological Scenarios

Abstract: This article categorizes four kinds of adverse effects to human health caused by ecosystem change: direct, mediated, modulated, and systems failure. The effects are categorized on their scale, complexity, and lag-time. Some but not all of these can be classified as resulting from reduced ecosystem services. The articles also explores the impacts that different socioeconomic-ecologic scenarios are likely to have on human health and how changes to human health may, in turn, influence the unfolding of four differ… Show more

“…Conceptual models of how human health depends upon ecosystem health (and vice versa) are being developed, but this connection is generally ascribed to tangible connections, for example, documented links between infectious disease transmission and ecological degradation (46). Evidence of bidirectional links between human health and ecosystems has inspired calls for healthcare systems to address access to, and the health of, natural settings to adequately nurture human health (20,(47)(48)(49)(50).…”

“…However, human activities are continuously modifying the physical, chemical, and biological composition of the environment. It is, therefore, essential to understand them as the existence, and survival of human beings depend upon the appropriate interactions with the environment (Butler et al 2005;UNESCO 1995;Gibbs 1970).…”
