Human Impacts on Cable Beach, Broome (Western Australia)

Abstract: There are concerns that Cable Beach, which is of outstanding natural beauty and a major tourist attraction for Broome and the Kimberley region of northwest Australia, is suffering damage from recreational use, particularly that caused by off-road vehicles. To assess current levels of human impact on the shore and its fauna, the southern-most kilometer of the Beach, covering an area to which vehicles had access and an adjacent area closed to vehicles, was surveyed for human usage and shore crab abundance. “…Vehicles driven on beaches can reduce faunal populations and can pulverize and disperse organic matter in wrack lines, thereby destroying young dune vegetation and losing nutrients (Godfrey & Godfrey 1981; Moss & McPhee 2006; Foster-Smith et al . 2007). Vehicles driven in and just seaward of dunes can severely damage vegetation (Anders & Leatherman 1987; Godfrey & Godfrey 1981).…”

“…Presently, the environmental occurrence and effects of PBMs are gaining a wide scientic and social interest. 1,2 Studies from around the world including the Antarctic Peninsula, 3,4 Australasia, 5,6 Europe and the North Atlantic, [7][8][9] Mediterranean, 10,11 and the Middle East 12,13 have documented PBMs as a component of marine and shoreline debris; and as a component of freshwater aquatic environments. 14 The chemical diversity of PBMs makes the assessment of their environmental fate a major challenge.…”
